THE VENDING MACHINE PROJECT is a visual art event taking place during the Magnet Entertainment Dublin Fringe Festival ‘06. It will be bringing together 60 Irish and international artists at various stages of their careers who have been selected by Alan Butler and Lola Rayne Booth. The artists were invited to create art to be displayed and sold in one of the projects three vending machines. The machines will be placed in different locations throughout Dublin City for the duration of the Fringe Festival
The artists responded to this challenge by creating over 750 tiny original art works between them. The work spans many disciplines, video, music, painting, print and sculpture and ideas range from specially handmade board games, to voodoo dolls of participating artists, to offers of an alternative tour around the city. There is sure to be something in THE VENDING MACHINE PROJECT to appeal to everyone.
By taking contemporary art out of the traditional gallery setting and bringing it further into the public domain, the organisers hope that this project will subvert perceptions of art and how it should be displayed and distributed. All of the art works in THE VENDING MACHINE PROJECT are for sale for just €5. This ridiculously low price reflects the general intent of the project, idealistic as it may seem; to make art accessible to everyone and to have fun while doing so!
The machines will be located in Connolly Station (main concourse), The Lobby Bar at Crawdaddy, Harcourt Street, and The Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar from 12th -29th September. There will be twenty artists exhibited in each machine and each artist will have up to 20 works for sale. To see exactly what is on offer, you can visit www.thevendingmachineproject.org (to be live by the end of August). Each artwork has been documented on this website and information about the artists is also available.
